A couple thoughts on this:Apparently a group of atheists in Pennsylvania seriously thought this would be a good idea for a billboard.
Um, no. FAIL.
I know there are atheists out there who don’t suck, but they’re damned hard to find.
1. This livingartist person considers this billboard to be racist, and then turns around and practices her own form of prejudice by saying that atheists who “don’t suck” are “damned hard to find.” Actually, no, they’re not that hard to find. You should actually try looking.
2. I can’t stand this billboard. Yes, I get the idea behind it: the Bible is full of ridiculous, backwards, harmful “ethics,” and people who say they believe the Bible need to consider verses like Colossians 3:22 seriously. But I don’t think this billboard gets the message through because the imagery evokes such strong emotions in people. First thing I thought when I saw this was: “Nice, a bunch of white people put up a billboard of a black guy in slavery.” No, The American Atheists group does not advocate slavery. This billboard demonstrates the opposite in fact. Nevertheless, this billboard is just plain insensitive. What are they going to do next, post a billboard depicting a woman getting sexually assaulted next to a Bible quote from Numbers 31? Hey, David Silverman and the rest of you at American Atheists, I get it: there are some messed up things in the Bible. Do you really think this is the best way to convey that message?
